We are heading into the last push of learning before the Christmas Break… It is hard to believe that we are in that part of the school year.
We are continuing to work in all areas. Academically, we are moving into regrouping (adding or subtracting), more working with numbers, cursive writing, letter writing, our community is like, learning our Christmas song for the concert…
Before I forget, it is getting colder and we are still going outside for our playtime. Please talk to our children about wearing their snow pants and all their winter gear! I am not fighting with them – the expectation is what you have, you wear.
They are so engaged in reading a new series of books- ZigZag (the adventures of a fly!)

This coming week, we will continue to work in all subject areas… I wanted to say THANK YOU for coming in to talk about your child’s learning progress.
Over the weekend, take time to refect on the woman and men who lost their lives for our Rights and Freedoms. You would have found in our children’s homework binder the Legion Poster Contest permission form for you to fill. I have indicated with a star the sections you need to fill in. It is hard to believe that we are already into the first report card and Parent-Teacher conference time of the year. It is going to be great to get to sit with you all and talk about our children’s progress and some challenges. What is the most important element of all this is the celebrate our children’s learning and growth. As you may know, it is also Book Fair time in the library… It is a great opportunity to get great books as stocking stuffers – I know it is early but time is really flying.
Please note that the Report cards will be in our children’s homework binder on Tuesday… Also remember that we are at the beginning of the year and still time for some academic and social growth. You support with reading at home is paying off for our children. It is the most important learning in our grade level.
This past week was all about Halloween… This coming week is all about Remembrance Day – reading books, our Assembly, coloring pictures, talking about peace and how can I help… I normally ask our children to participate in the Legion Art Competition- more information to come. In the past, my students always do very well in the prizes.
We had a great week with our Pumpking Math activities… Next week, we will be doing some candy math! It is all part of the season. Please keep in mind that our children are encourage to wear their Halloween costume but we are not letting them have a mask or accessories (safety first…).
This was the last step, we needed to paint to make the pumpkins look festive!
The first step was to make predictions on how heavy each pumpkin was… Then, we needed to put them in order from the smallest to the heaviest… They ranged from 5kg to 9 kg!
We had to get the seeds after we made predictions on how many could be in our pumpkin! It was great! Some children were saying this is really messy… Welcome to the real world! hiiiii
Counting by 10, by 20 and even by 100 was the hardest part! Could you imagine what happened if we needed to start again… Learning to be accurate!
The final numbers are in! That was alot of work…
Monday, we will eat some pumpkin seeds (they came for Bulk Barn!)…

Let me start by saying THANK YOU for all the pumpkins! We are going to have so much fun in math… You will probably hear about it. I will post pictures during the process.
This week, we are continuing to enhance our skills in reading by working with a partner. Reading the same book and sharing it’s content are important skills. At home, you may get our children to talk about their book. If they are able to do this, it means that they are actually reading and comprending. Great Job! In writing, we have been working on authors write daily! They are doing a great job but we are facing some frustrations. That is all about the process. At home, talking about anything and everything helps. Imagination is able to be encourage daily. In math,we are still in the number recognition, skip counting by 2 and 10 (forward and backward), odd and even numbers…
As indicatded on the homework sheet of the week, we are having a Popscile sale ($1 each) this week. Orders are due by Thursday. All monies raised will help our school purchase items to support student learning.
Our week was very exciting from going to get a tree and being on Compass… It is all about creating some learning experiences for our children to able to talk and write about. We are starting to work on writing small moments. This is another way to talk about something that happened – it could be as simple as washing your face or as complex as a special moment on a trip.
It is really exciting to see that we have already received 2 pumpkins for our Halloween Math Spooky Fun! Please let me know if you are able to provide one pumpkin for our class by Oct. 22nd.

Before I write about anything else let me take this opportunity to be Thankful for all of the great children I have the pleasure of working with… They are full of life, motivation and eagerness to discover new learnings! I also would like to say Thank you for continuing to support what is happening in the classroom. Together, we are able to provide a wonderful learning journey for all our children.
I am fully aware that you may be hearing crazy stories for our classroom… Yes, we do laugh and enjoy each others company. It is so very important to create strong relationships with each other to be able to trust and to feel safe when we are struggling with some concepts to learn.
This coming week is all about being Thankful and recognizing all the great people and blessings in our lives. Writing, reading and math activities will make this very evident.
Here are a few pictures of our children working in their causerie groups (talking groups). They are creating a monster family! They are fully enjoying this creation and using their imagination really helps with writing, reading and problem solving.
After Thanksgiving, we will be starting some Halloween work… Spooky fun in the horizon. Therefore, I am looking for 6 real pumpkins (average size) if you have any it would be wonderful if you could donate one to our classroom – you may bring them to our class or drop them off in the office before Oct. 22nd. We will be weighing them, counting all the seeds, learning about their origine of using them for Halloween and of course decorating them. I will buy them if we don’t have any donated. Thank you for your help.
Please ask our children how they enjoyed working with their buddies from the 6X class last Friday – get all the details from them.
This coming Monday is Orange Shirt Day… This day is to focus on the fact that Every Child matters and to remember the survivors of the Residential School for Aboriginal children. Our school will have the greatest opportunity to have an Elder who survived the Residential schools as a speaker at our monthly assemblyMonday.
Our apple picking adventure was so much fun! The children enjoyed learning about the life cycle of an apple tree. Our morning was divided in three parts: apple picking, education on the life cycle of an apple tree and a wagon ride around the orchard.Here are a few pictures from our morning:
We will continue our learning journey this coming week… Reading, writing, numeracy, organized talking (group work) and a few surprises are planned. Thank you so very much for making our children read at home every day. I am seeing some very positive results. Furthermore, you will find a duotang with words- this is only for the children to read. Please try to incorporate the reading of the words with the small book reading. You may help my by placing a small check mark next to the words our children are able to read automatically – these are high frequency words in French that we don’t decode. Don’t forget that homework is only 10 minutes.
We started our Writing Workshop and our children are doing really well. We are writing! It is all about sharing our thinking with others in class. It is so exciting to see them talking about how words are spelled, if their story is missing something…
This coming week is full and really busy… On Wednesday, we are heading to Arlington Apple Orchard. Every one needs to wear RUBBER BOOTS! It is a request by the owner. The area may be very wet in the morning therefore we don’t want the children to have wet feet. Furthermore, you will get a letter on Monday asking for money to pay for this… I am covering the cost for our field trip therefore you don’t need to send any money.
On Thursday, we will have our Terry Fox Assembly to kick off our afternoon walk. Our school has set a $500 goal. We are hoping the reach it. Please consider sending in $1 or more to help us out.
Here we are preparing our Birthday book for one of our classmate.
As you know, this Friday is a PD therefore the children don’t have any school.
You can actually see the engagement and concentration of the children working on their wonderful creation… They were task to create a new zoo with all the necessary details. This is/was the first group work – we are learning some very important social skills like cooperating, negociation and sharing. It goes without saying that working with a partner is not always an easy task.
This week, we are going to start writing our first story. We are reading daily and starting on Monday our children will be doing their book exchange – please check to schedule on our blog. Furthermore, here are a few important dates and events:
Sept 16th (Monday)
Breakfast programs starts, hot lunches and milk program (.50 for white and .75 for chocolate milk). I will show our children how to order their milk daily. Please keep in mind that you need to order the hot lunches on line before midnight Sunday. If you are paying cash, please tell your child to bring the money to the office as soon as they get to school.

School Picture Day
School Dance for K-3 after school. This is a fundraiser for our playground. The cost is $5. Please send in money before Friday if your child will be going. I will e-mail more information once I get it.
